Miroslav Spasov (b. 1964, Skopje, then SFR Yugoslavia, R. of Macedonia) is a composer of instrumental and electroacoustic music whose work bridges contemporary acoustic practice and creative music technology. He graduated from St. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje with degrees in Music Theory (1989), Composition (1992), and Conducting (1993), and later completed his MMus (1999) and PhD (2003) in Composition at the University of Calgary, Canada, under David Eagle and Allan Bell, respectively. Since 2005, he has been Professor of Composition and Creative Music Technology at Keele University, UK.
Spasov’s music has been performed across Europe, North America, and beyond by ensembles including the Kreützer Quartet, New London Chamber Choir, Janáček Philharmonic, Regina Symphony Orchestra, Macedonian Philharmonic, Freiburg Percussion Ensemble, Reconsil Ensemble Vienna, Ankara Woodwind Quintet, and SKAW Duo, as well as by distinguished soloists such as violinists János Négyesy and Päivikki Nykter, bass clarinettist Sarah Watts, pianists Michael Bell and Nadezda Pozarickaya, and violinist Leonid Peisahov.
His compositional work has been supported by grants from the Canada Council for the Arts (2004, 2008, 2016) and the Alberta Arts Council (2003). Notable distinctions include the 3rd Prize at the Macedonian Ministry of Culture’s Concours for New Music Compositions (2015) for his orchestral work Danzacalle, the 1st Prize at the International Computer Music Competition Pierre Schaeffer (1999) for Metaanthropos/Evolutio 1 (flute and electronics), and an honourable mention at the 10e Concours International de Composition Musicale de Besançon (France, 2000) for his orchestral piece à gauche, à droite, en haut.
